Assignment 3 - Workshop Participation and Panel Discussion (Individual Assignment)

Learning Outcomes (LOs) and Objectives

This assignment (proportionally) covers each of the following Learning Outcomes from 9230 Contemporary Leadership and Management:

· [LO #1] Critically assess leadership styles, management skills, communications skills and ethical decision making, both personally and in a range of workplace contexts.

· [LO #2] Apply individual and team working skills, as well as contemporary knowledge, concepts and models, to progressing organisational goals.

· [LO #3] Critically analyse contemporary theories and practices of leadership as these apply to competence across diverse cultural settings.

· [LO #4] Demonstrate an ability to engage in continuous reflection and learning and to apply that reflectivity in a student’s own practice as leaders and managers

This assignment is an individual assignment, is weighted at 10% of the overall (total) weighting and is marked out of 20 marks/points. Refer to the marking rubric attached to the last section of this assignment.

The objectives of this and subsequent assignments are to develop:

1. Ethical practice: a commitment to sustainability and high ethical standards in social and professional practices

2. Lifelong learning: the ability to be responsive to change, to be inquiring and reflective in practice, through information literacy and autonomous, self-managed learning.

3. Communication and social skills: the ability to communicate and collaborate with individuals, and within teams, in professional and community settings.

4. Cultural competences: an ability to engage with diverse cultural and bi-cultural perspectives in both global and local settings and in the context of the Treaty of Waitangi (three principles: partnership, participation and protection).

Assignment Task

This assignment requires you to work in groups of 4-5 to plan and conduct a group workshop on a given topic and then hold a 10-minute panel discussion (presenting a very concise overview of your findings) in ascheduled 9230 class session. After conducting the workshop and panel discussion, you will write an individual (NOT group) Workshop Findings report. The word count for this report is a minimum of 1000 words.

Note:

1. Although this is a group workshop and panel discussion exercise, the written assignment (Workshop findings report) is individual effort - written based on the findings of the group workshop and feedback from the panel discussion.

2. Groups are to be formed with 3-4 students in each group. Each group formed must be approved by the lecturer before the planning and conducting phase of the group workshop.

The workshop and panel discussion topic is:

Enhancing leadership and managerial competencies for effective organisational performance.

i.e., How can leaders and managers develop the skills they need to drive success for their organisations?

Workshop and Panel Discussion

As a group organise a workshop (in-person or virtual) on the specified topic and agree on at least 10 findings. Post- workshop, your group (as a panel) is to orally present a very concise overview of any five findings to the audience (other 9230 students) in a 10-minute timeslot in a scheduled 9230 class session.

Report Structure - Workshop Findings

· Introduction (2 marks)

Briefly introduce the workshop topic, the findings report structure and objectives.

Briefly explain the workshop format (and processes/methods) used to explore this topic.

State the key findings identified during the workshop discussion.

· Findings (15 marks) - For any five of the key findings identified in the introduction, provide a clear and in-depth analysis. This should include:

Elaboration: Briefly explain the finding in detail.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Critically analyse the strengths and weaknesses of this approach for

developing leadership and management skills. Consider factors like effectiveness in diverse cultural contexts, potential ethical considerations, and applicability to various leadership styles and organisational settings.

Supporting Evidence: Provide supporting evidence for your analysis through research findings, case studies, or practical examples.

· Conclusion (3 marks)

Briefly summarise the main takeaways from the workshop discussions and analysis of the key findings.

Briefly discuss any challenges you encountered during the workshop in identifying solutions or achieving group consensus (e.g., limited time, varying perspectives etc.). Explain how your group overcame these challenges.

Referencing

· Use in-text citations (APA 7th edition format) to acknowledge referenced sources.

· Include a separate reference list at the end of the article using proper APA formatting for each entry.

· Incorporate at least 10 reputable/credible academic sources to support your writing. Supplement the

academic sources with other credible sources (as needed) such as reputable websites, news sources, press releases, organisational publications etc.

· For evidence-based and well-referenced work expected at the postgraduate level, the following classification applies:

Excellent: Excellent use of reputable sources and adherence to APA format.

Good: Good use of reputable sources and minor APA format errors.

Satisfactory: Basic to Good use of sources but with minor APA format errors.

Poor: Limited use of reputable sources and/or numerous APA format errors.

Very poor: Inadequate or missing use of reputable sources. Poor or no adherence to APA format.

NB: The APA referencing style consists of two elements:

1. In-text citation (using the narrative and/or parenthetical style), and

2. An associated entry in the reference list for each in-text citation.
