Book sample spreads 2: illustrated book design

50% |  DUE TUESDAY 10 JUNE 2025

Please note that there is 5% penalty per day for late submissions.

The aim of this assignment is to produce a chapter layout for an illustrated book. A raw manuscript. and set of images with accompanying captions are provided.

Your page dimensions should be set to 154mm wide x 234mm high.

Importantly, although you are only required to lay out one chapter, you are expected to prepare your file as if further chapters will follow.

Additionally

•     We have now covered everything you need to understand about formatting text, handling layouts and managing images in the workshops. This is an invaluable reference point for approaching this assignment, particularly workshop 4.

Make sure to apply the typographic and layout principles we’ve been learning about too.

•     Like the other assignments, use this assignment to demonstrate what you’ve learnt about preparing text and layouts using InDesign.

•     There’s no explicit brief to tell you about the intended ‘readership’ this time.

But like the sample chapter used in workshop 4, this is an informative reading experience for adults. You’re largely free to interpret and respond to the brief and content as you create your layout.

•     Remember to start by considering your grid outcome — use one of the grid examples shown in workshop 4 as your reference point. Please note the ratio you use on the paste board on the first page.

•     Do not delete or add any additional text or photos. In this assignment, your role is a graphic designer, not an editor.

•     The completed workshop 4 PDF sample demonstrates the kind of attention that’s required in a layout project like this. Use the headings in the workshop notes 4 a&b to assist you in deciding what to to first.

•     Please set the main text justified last line left and allow no more then five hyphens per page (in the main text that is). Choice of typeface and design of elements etc are yours to make. Like in the other assignments, you won’t be marked on ‘professional’ design skills as such, but you should make headings, layout and hierarchies etc. coherent and sensitive to the conventions of good layout practice.

•     You may start placing images anywhere you like in the chapter (no need to seek out explicit reference to the images in the text,) but be sure to keep images in the correct numeric order.

•     You’re free to crop and scale any of the images —just be careful to properly manage that process. Please place the images in their appropriate order and close to their text reference.

Submission

1.   A compressed file (.zip) of the packaged artwork files (when packaging from InDesign please select and include Fonts and Linked Graphics (images & fonts)

2.   The .zip should inculde a PDF for proofing of your chapter. (See pages 35 & 36 of the workshop 4 notes for further instructions on how to export a PDF.)

3.   Submit the .zip file via canvas.

If you’re unsure about anything in this brief, don’t hesitate to ask.
