Twentieth Century World History
The essay will involve creating a historical narrative by taking excerpts from two or more newspaper articles. If you use short articles, for example, you may need more than two articles. After putting together the primary source excerpts you will write a narrative of about 4 pages related to the excerpts and articles. As a suggestion for the number of excerpts, perhaps around five to seven would work.
-Introduce your source: what are the strengths and limitations of the articles you use?
-How do the articles you chose interpret the history they relate? Do you agree with the interpretations offered? Why or why not? How would you interpret the history?
-How does your analysis relate to the source material that is contained in that day’s newspaper as a whole? For example, you can think thematically about your subject and how it relates to the same themes in the newspaper issues you read. If your excerpts come from more than two issues of a newspaper chose two days to write about. This section should be about 4 pages long.
-It is possible to use articles from each newspaper.
-The essay should be 7-9 pages long, not including the excerpts or the articles. Only the material in the newspaper issues should be used in the writing of the essay. You should include your articles at the end of the essay.
