MESF Homework #5
Due Nov. 15, 2025
Use ANSYS or other FEM software to solve the following problems. Please give (1) the discretized domain (please show your defined boundary condition/loads), (2) the deformation/temperature of the structure, (3) stress/heat flux field, and (4) the maximum stress/heat flux and their locations.
Problem 1: The cross section of the beam is rectangular with its width of 2cm and its height of 4cm. The Young’s modulus of the beam is 40 GPa and the Poisson ratio is 0.3.
Problem 2. Solve the 2-D heat conduction in a domain shown in Figure 1. Both AB and BC are insulated. The thermal conductivity is and the heat transfer coefficient is

Problem 3: Perform. structural analysis of the thin plate illustrated in Figure 2. The plate is subjected to a linearly varied normal pressure on the right boundary and is attached to a wall via rollers installed along the entire left boundary except the lowest point where a fixed support is used. The length, a, and the width, b, of the plate are 6 cm and 3 cm respectively, and the radius of the circular hole is 0.5cm. The thickness is 0.5 cm. The Young’s modulus is 204 GPa, shear modulus is 79 GPa, and the Poisson’s ratio is 0.29. The applied pressure is linear along the width of the plate: P0 = 3 MPa, P1 = 6 MPa
Figure 2. The hole is located at the center of the plate.
