Speaking Coursework (II) – Individual Oral Presentation
Comprises 20% of your final course grade
Due date: 26 Nov – 3 Dec 2025
About one week before your speaking assessment, your instructor will inform. you about the exact date and time of your assessment.
Your final assignment due for this course is an individual oral presentation of 8 minutes, which requires the use of the language skills taught throughout the semester.
See the marking scheme at the end of this document.
Your scenario
In this assignment, you will act as an External Consultant and help a university or university department / unit to improve the design of the department's homepage (webpage A).
Based on your written report, your oral presentation will include an overview of the webpage evaluation project that you conducted, but the main focus is to outline the key findings from the research study, and specifically, the changes you recommend to improve the webpage design, along with your justifications for these changes. In order to convince the university/university department or unit to implement your suggested changes, you should engage them in a persuasive presentation. Your purpose, therefore, is to walk the audience through the major parts of the written report so that all key ideas are made clear to them before they read your report.
Notes: Your classmates and instructor will be your presentation audience (i.e. representatives from the university concerned).
Important Notes
Organization
The presentation should be divided into three parts: an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion.
In order to help your audience follow the flow of your presentation, ensure that you provide sufficient transitions between sections and ideas.
Content
Although you will be presenting information from your webpage evaluation report, you should NOT memorize portions of the report. Please consider the following:
I. To whom will the oral presentation be addressed?
ii. For what purpose will the oral presentation be given?
iii. To achieve the purpose, what information should be included in the report?
iv. What is the duration of the oral presentation?
Language
When making an oral presentation, it is critical to use a semi-formal spoken style. You must NOT read any part of your presentation. Reading, at any stage, will adversely affect your grade. Read the Fluency & Coherence and Delivery criteria below for details.
Timing
Make sure your presentation lasts at least six minutes and not more than eight minutes. A 5% penalty will be applied for any presentation shorter than six minutes.
Video-recording
All presentations will be video-recorded.
Visuals
You are required to give a PowerPoint presentation. Upload your PowerPoint slides to Moodle by midnight the day before your presentation. Late submission penalty will be applied to the PPT submission (i.e. 5% of the total possible marks will be deducted for each day late).
