Writing Coursework (II) - Written Report

Comprises 25% of your final course grade

Due date: Sunday 16 Nov 2025 (Midnight)

Your final writing coursework due for this course is a written report of 900 – 1,100 words, which will use all the writing and language skills taught throughout the semester.

For more details about grading, see the marking scheme at the end of this document.

Your report scenario

You are an External Consultant in charge of a project which aims to help a university or university department / unit to improve their website homepage design (Webpage A). You need to research existing webpages of similar organizations and choose one (Webpage B) that would seem to fit the needs of the university or university department/unit. Compare and evaluate the features of both webpages using criteria that you have identified and defined. Also, you will need to interview at least one individual for additional information. According to your evaluation and the responses you received from your interviewee(s), you will make recommendations to the university or university department/ unit regarding how to improve their homepage design.

For Writing Coursework II, you are required to submit the following 4 items on Moodle:

1. Written Report – Word file

2. Recording of Interview(s) – MP3 file

3. Declaration of Academic Integrity – Word file

4. “Work in Progress” folder - PDF/JPG file

Your written report should include the following sections.  Use the ‘Report Template’ on the University English I Moodle course page for your report.

This includes the 2 webpages under study.

You should include at least 1 academic journal article (in English). You should NOT use sources such as Wikipedia, internet forums or blogs.

Suggested Stages of the Research and Writing

Stage of research

To be completed by the end of:

· Choose a university or university department / unit webpage (Webpage A).

· Choose your webpage criteria, define and justify them.

· Look for at least one relevant academic journal article (in English) to be used in the report. You should NOT use sources such as Wikipedia, internet forums or blog.

· Choose a similar homepage for comparison (Webpage B).

· Evaluate and compare the two webpages.

· Create a “Work in Progressfolder.

· Jot down in point form. some similarities and differences between the two webpages, and save the file as “Report Version 1” in your “Work in Progress” folder.

 

 Week 9

 

· Decide which type(s) of people will be interviewed.

· Write questions for the interview(s) and conduct the interview(s).

 

 

Important notes:

· Keep accurate notes about date(s) and people interviewed – you will need the dates for the Methodology section.

· The interview(s) should be conducted in English.

· Each interview should last at least 5 minutes.

· The interview(s) should be audio-recorded.

® This is to help you select appropriate quotes or paraphrases.

® The audio recordings must be submitted along with your final report.

 

 Week 10

· Draft the different sections of the report.  Save this draft as “Report Version 2” in your “Work in Progress” folder.

· Highlight the sentences in the academic journal article(s) cited in your report. Save the article(s) with the highlighted text in your “Work in Progress” folder.

· Proofread the report draft.  If you have used GenAI in any sections of the report, keep screenshots of interactions with GenAI, and save them in your “Work in Progress” folder.

 

Important notes:

· Synthesize your evaluation with your interviewee’s opinions.

· Cite all sources used accurately in APA style.

· Not more than 15% of your final report should comprise quotes.

· At the end of the report, include information about your word count

 

 Week 11

 

Make sure you submit the following items through the right submission links on Moodle:

A.  Written Report  – see the instructions below.

B.  Interview audio recording

C.  Declaration of Academic Integrity form. (with all necessary details and your signature).

D. “Work in Progress” folder (i.e. Report Versions 1 & 2; academic journal article(s) with used text highlighted;  screenshots of interactions with GenAI (if relevant)

 

 

Submitting your report through Turnitin:

Your report will be submitted to Turnitin. It is a web-based system which checks your writing against all content published on the Internet and all student writing previously submitted. Read this short document produced by the Lingnan University Teaching and Learning Centre to understand how you will upload your work to Turnitin through the Moodle page:

It is important that you refer to the Originality Report generated on Turnitin and make necessary changes to your work if any plagiarised text is highlighted in your submission and re-submit your work again BEFORE the due date (Note: Originality Report generation for resubmissions is subject to a twenty-four hour delay).

Please ensure that you use Gen AI within the following guidelines:

Acceptable Use of GenAI in Writing Coursework (II) – Written Report

You may use a GenAI tool to:

· brainstorm ideas about how to evaluate and compare webpages

· learn some webpage design concepts

· check the accuracy and style. of your reference list.

· Proofread for language mistakes

You must declare any of the above GenAI uses by completing and submitting the Declaration of Academic Integrity form. available on Moodle.

Unacceptable Use of GenAI in Writing Coursework (II) – Written Report

You MUST NOT use a GenAI tool in the following ways (but not limited to):

· Write your report in whole or in part.

· Generate a reference list for your report (when you have not read or understood the sources).

· Use inaccurate information (including references) generated by AI.

· Compare and evaluate the two webpages of your choice.

· Prepare and record interview questions and responses.

· Summarise, paraphrase and/or synthesis source texts. (You should not simply cut and paste text made by AI into your report.)

You should keep a folder of your preparation work, known as the “Work in progress folder”. This should include screenshots of interactions with GenAI, drafts, plans and anything you do in preparation for the assessment. You will submit all of this as a Zip file alongside the report. This will not be assessed and there is no penalty for non-assessment. However, if there is a question over the authorship of your essay, this folder can be considered. Important note: Since LUE1001 is an English language enhancement course, you should not submit a report that has been generated using translation software.
