Brief Introduction to the Module
This year-long module aims to develop students' academic English language skills in reading, listening, writing and speaking and better prepare them f or their academic study at XJTLU. In addition to improving their English language skills, students will be encouraged to think critically and engage in i ndependent learning through the module. All knowledge and skills learned and practised in Year One will contribute to their further academic study in the following years at XJTLU.

SECTION B: What You Can Expect from the Module
Educational Aims of the Module
The module is designed for students demonstrating an approximate CEFR B2 English language proficiency upon entry to XJTLU. These students require 100-200 hours ofguided tuition in order to consolidate and surpass the Year 1 exit level ofCEFR B2 and to develop academic skills for Year 2 studies.
The module willtherefore focus primarily on the consolidation and demonstration ofthe three language systems (grammar, lexis, pronunciation) an d four language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing). Assessments are weighted towards the end ofthe academic year so that students are a ble to develop suficient linguistic proficiency to demonstrate and surpass CEFR B2. Pastoral skills are also included in the module to enable stude nts to become active and self-directed learners ofEnglish.
Academic skills are included towards the end ofthe module as a medium for assessing linguistic development. These skills are also a fundamental aspect ofYear 1 provision so that students are adequately prepared for the rigours of study in Year 2.
Learning Outcomes
Students completing the module should be able to:

B Employ a range of level-appropriate reading strategies in order to extract meaning fromgraded, non-academic, and academic reading materials C Communicate spoken ideas ona range of non-academic and academic topics, and in non-academic and academic situations, with level-approp riate fluency, complexity, and accuracy
D Produce written responses to non-academic and academic tasks with level-appropriate coherence, complexity, and accuracy E Demonstrate awareness and understanding of level-appropriate linguistic forms
F Demonstrate awareness of and ability to utilise a range of academic skills and conventions
Methods of Learning and Teaching
Students will have 8 hours ofguided tuition per week. This time is split into two categories:
• Seminars (2 x 2 hours per week) are used for teaching a range of level-appropriate language and academic skills
• Tutorials (live / asynchronous / flipped) (4 hours per week) are used for focused homework and/or asynchronous activities and student-centred academic learning activities
Students entering the university with a CEFR B2 level of linguistic proficiency require focused and concerted support so that academic tasks may be satisfactorily completed. Teaching and learning therefore focuses on increasing linguistic input both inside and outside the classroom. The use of both seminars and tutorials permits diferent teaching methods to be utilised during the course to ensure students are given suficient guidance and opportunities to practice the various skills mentioned in the learning outcomes and syllabus.
The guided self-study activities will be extensions and/or consolidation of work carried out in the seminars and tutorials.

Requirement and Guideline of the Assessment Task

In Semester 1, students will write a 200-250 integrated summary of an academic reading text and an academic lecture on the same topic. [ICT 1 : completed in Semester 1]
Aims
The aim ofthis task is to assess the following module learning outcomes:
A. Employ a range of level-appropriate listening strategies in order to extract meaning fromgraded, non-academic and academic listening mat erials, and from verbal interactions.
A. Employ a range of level-appropriate reading strategies in order to extract meaning fromgraded, non-academic, and academic reading mat erials.

D) Produce written responses to non-academic and academic tasks with level-appropriate coherence, complexity, and accuracy.
E) Demonstrate awareness and understanding of level-appropriate linguistic forms.
F) Demonstrate awareness of and ability to utilise a range of academic skills and conventions.
Format
· Students will write a 200-250 integrated summary of an academic reading text and an academic lecture on the same topic.
· Students will be assessed individually under exam conditions.
· The topics ofthe lectures/texts are based on the topics covered in class this semester.
· Your lecturer will give you a task sheet with all the necessary instructions about the test in Week 8.
· You have 90 minutes to complete the test.
· Students must transfer their answers to the answer sheet.
· ICT1 is worth 5% ofyour total module grade.
Please note that:
· Your ICT1 willtake place during Week 10 class time inyour normalEAP classroom.
· ICT1 cannot be rescheduled ifa student is absent or late.
· Ifa student misses their ICT1 because of illness or special circumstances, they maybe able to apply for mitigating circumstances. Please s ee Section C: Additional information for details.
How will yourICT1 be marked?
· This test will be marked by an Advanced EAP lecturer.
· Markers will use a Marking Scheme similar to the one on the next page when assessing your summary.
· You will not receive the mark for ICTs until both are completed. (NOTE: You will not receive the final module mark until allthe assessme nt components are completed.)
In Semester 2, students will have a group discussion.
Semester2 In-Class Task 2 (ICT2) (Provisional)
· Students discuss the topic in groups of3-4
· Support arguments with details, evidence, and workbook sources (reading, listening or speaking)
· Take notes on workbook sources before the test and bring the notes to the exam roomto support discussion.

C) Communicate spoken ideas on a range of non-academic and academic topics, and in non-academic and academic situations, with level-ap propriate fluency, complexity, and accuracy.

F) Demonstrate awareness of and ability to utilise a range of academic skills and conventions.
Format
Academic group discussion on a given topic:
Students will be assessed individually under exam conditions.
Topics are related to class materials.
Students will have 6-10 minutes to discuss depending on the group size.
ICT2 is worth 5% ofyour total module grade.
