THE HONG KONG POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY

DEAPRTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING (BME)

Programme: MSc in Biomedical Engineering (47002-BME)

Subject Code:                    BME 5133

Subject Title:

Maximum Marks:             100

Date:                                 29 Apr - 4 May 2024

Submission Deadline:      4 May 2024

Instructions:

There are four questions in this paper. Each question carries 25 marks.    Answer ALL questions.

Q1. (25 pts)

(1) Please describe the procedure and signal processing method for detecting event-related potentials (ERPs) through auditory stimulation with electroencephalography (EEG) for the hearing screen in newborns. Repeated measurements are required to obtain a stable ERP. Please explain the reasons. (15 pts)

(2) Read the article, ‘EEG-Controlled Wall-Crawling Cleaning Robot Using SSVEP-Based Brain-Computer Interface’. Describe the overall method of the evoked potentials by visual stimulation for the robot control in aspects of 1) subject preparation, 2) electrode and stimulation configuration, 3) EEG processing, and 4) commands to the external robot). Please discuss the  advantages/disadvantages of the method for noise suppression in the real-time control. (10 pts)

Q2. (25 pts)

(1) Electrical safety is a major concern in designing rehabilitation robots for disabilities. (1) Please explain how to prevent electrical shocks if a robotic system uses either invasive or noninvasive techniques. Please compare the advantages and disadvantages of implanted neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and transcutaneous NMES for motor restoration of disabilities, in aspects of 1) electrical safety, 2) power consumption and 3) NMES functional stability. (15 pts)

(2) Read the article, ‘Relation between distal motor latency delay and sensory action potential absence of the median nerve in carpal  tunnel  syndrome ’.  How  did the authors interpret the correlation between the distal motor latency (DML) and sensory conductive velocity (SCV)? Please discuss the potential problems of the methods for the NCT in the study. (10 pts)

Q3. (25 pts)

(1) Biopotential modeling has been widely adopted in neuroscience and rehabilitation engineering. Please discuss the application of the models (i.e., point process signal model, circuitry model and integrate-and-fire model) in biopotential (e.g., neuronal signals and electromyography) interpretation.        (15 pts)

(2) Read the article, ‘Neuronal Degeneration Impairs Rhythms Between Connected Microcircuits ’. What is the main research purpose of the study? How were the integrate-and-fire neuron models adopted in the study to achieve the research purpose? What assumptions were proposed in the simulation? Please discuss the potential problems in the work.  (10 pts)

Q4 (25 pts)

(1) Robots have been proposed in poststroke physical rehabilitation as the assistance to the manual operation. Robots with voluntary-intention-driven control demonstrated better rehabilitative effects than those only provide continuous passive motions. Please list at least three biosignals that have been adopted in the voluntary-intention-driven control and briefly discuss their advantages and disadvantages. (10 pts)

(2)  Please search at most 5 latest and representative papers on rehabilitation robots for motor restoration after stroke, and summarize the current technologies, their challenges, and possible solutions for the future directions (word limit 1000; Please list out the references in your summary.)  (15 pts)
