PSCL 282

Spring 2024

Exam 3 Review Guide

Exam 3 will be completed on Canvas. It opens the afternoon of Monday 4/22 and is due Sunday 4/28 at 11:59pm. You can complete the exam any time within that window, but it will have a 2-hour timer and must be completed in one sitting.

Items on Exam 3 may draw from any of the following topics:

Independent samples t test

What kind of difference and/or what kinds of variables are examined in this analysis; defining, calculating, and interpreting independent samples t using relevant formulas; assumptions of an independent samples t test

Hypothesis testing for this analysis: typical null/alternative hypothesis, sampling distribution of the difference between two means, relevant degrees of freedom, using a t table to confirm statistical significance, interpreting SPSS output, calculating and interpreting effect size (Cohen’s d)

Dependent samples t test

What kind of difference and/or what kinds of variables are examined in this analysis; defining, calculating, and interpreting dependent samples t using relevant formulas; assumptions of a dependent samples t test

Hypothesis testing for this analysis: typical null/alternative hypothesis, sampling distribution of the mean difference between two means, relevant degrees of freedom, using a t table to confirm statistical significance, interpreting SPSS output, calculating and interpreting effect size (Cohen’s d) for this test

One-way ANOVA (between-subjects)

What kind of differences and/or what kinds of variables are examined in this analysis; between-groups vs.  within-groups variability in one-way ANOVA; conceptual meaning of F ratios; calculating and interpreting F ratios in one-way ANOVA using relevant formulas; assumptions of one-way ANOVA

Hypothesis testing for this analysis: typical null/alternative hypothesis, F distribution, relevant degrees of freedom, using a F table to confirm statistical significance, interpreting SPSS output, when and how to use post- hoc tests, calculating and interpreting effect size (eta-squared)

Factorial ANOVA (between-subjects)

What kind of differences and/or what kinds of variables are examined in this analysis; between-groups vs.

within-groups variability in factorial ANOVA; main effects and interaction effects for two-way ANOVA; calculating and interpreting (all) F ratios in two-way ANOVA using relevant formulas; assumptions of factorial ANOVA

Hypothesis testing for this analysis: typical null/alternative hypotheses, F distribution, (all) relevant degrees of freedom, using a F table to confirm statistical significance for each effect in a two-way ANOVA, interpreting SPSS output for two-way ANOVA, when and how to use post-hoc tests, calculating and interpreting effect size (omega-squared)

Linear regression

What kind of associations and/or what kinds of variables are examined in this analysis; simple regression vs. multiple regression; defining, calculating, and interpreting least squares regression line for simple regression; standard error of estimate for simple regression (defining, not calculating)

Basics of hypothesis testing for this analysis: basic null/alternative hypotheses, interpreting SPSS output for simple and multiple regression, interpreting effect size (r2)

A note on resources you might utilize while completing the exam:

. This is a closed-book exam, so you cannot consult your textbook or notes while you work.

. Formulas will be provided for any item(s) that require you to use one (including for different degrees of freedom!), but you should understand the components of different formulas so that you can use them.

. A t table and F table will be provided for any item(s) requiring you to consult them, but you should understand how to use these tables.

. You are welcome to use paper/pencil and a calculator to work through exam items. Exam items will ask for a final answer without any expectation to “show your work” – so be sure to double-check things on your end before you select a response.

. You will not use SPSS to complete any exam items, but you may need to interpret SPSS output for analyses.
