Analyzing a Public Company Facing Geopolitical Risks

Background: Geopolitical risk is considered a top risk that companies face nowadays. Research shows that geopolitical risk reduces company investment, employment growth, and stalls innovation at companies. Wars and global competition pose risk to companies and shape their strategies and actions. It's March 2024. You've been approached by the CEO of a globally recognized public company, which operates in multiple geopolitical hotspots, to assist in preparing for an upcoming board meeting. The company is facing significant geopolitical risks that could impact its financial stability and strategic direction.

Task 1: Identify the geopolitical risk the company faces

· Identify the important geopolitical risks that the company faces, and the role of governments, customers, suppliers, communities, and shareholders in this context.

Task 2: Financial Statement Analysis

· Download and analyze the company's latest annual report.

· Analyze the company’s financial ratios as listed in Chapter 12 of the textbook. There are 18 ratios listed on page 684, Exhibit 12.7 in Chapter 12. You need to analyze at least 10 of them, including four profitability ratios, one asset turnover ratio, one liquidity ratio, two solvency ratios, and two market ratios. You may also use numbers/ratios disclosed by the firm that are related with geopolitical risk: e.g. some companies disclose revenue by geographic regions.

· Use a data visualization tool to present a trend analysis of at least five key ratios over the past five years, including at least three ratios that are relevant or most affected by geopolitical risks. Explain if these ratios are affected by the geopolitical risk the company face.

Task 3: Strategic Recommendations

· How do the geopolitical risks affect the core business, strategy, balance sheet, income statement, and financial planning of the company.

· Outline and evaluate strategic actions related with geopolitical risk that the companies are taking and your recommendation to the CEO.

Task 4: Group presentation (5 to 10 min)

· Evaluation: You will be evaluated based on the thoroughness and the insightfulness of the analysis, the relevance of the identified challenges and opportunities, the feasibility of the recommended strategic actions, and the presentation.

Look for the link to submit the assignment on Quercus under “Case Project Assignment Submission”. Only one student from each group will upload the group assignment using the “attach file” function.

5. The case response can be written in paragraph form. OR point form. OR both subject to the formatting instructions detailed below. There is no preference given to paragraph or point form.

6. Formatting Instructions

In order to ensure consistency in the formatting for the group assignments, the formatting guidelines below must be followed:

1. Font: Times New Roman

2. Font Size: 12

3. Line Spacing:

1. Double spacing for sections written in paragraph form.

2. 1.5 spacing for sections written in point form. (point form. is defined as using bullet points that are 1.27 cm or 0.5 inches from the 2.54cm or 1.00 inch margins of the page and the use of headings on a separate line to identify different sections of the answer).
