Part 3 (10 points)
Previous studies have shown that urban bus drivers have an extremely stressful job, and a large
proportion of drivers retire prematurely with disabilities due to occupational stress. These
stresses come from a combination of physical and social sources such as traffic congestion,
incessant time pressure, and unruly passengers. In the paper, “Hassles on the Job: A Study of a
Job Intervention with Urban Bus Drivers” (Journal of Organizational Behavior, Vol. 20, pp. 199 –
208), G. Evans et al. examined the effects of an intervention program to improve the conditions
of urban bus drivers. Among other variables, the researchers monitored diastolic blood
pressure of bus drivers in downtown Stockholm, Sweden. The data, in millimeters of mercury
(mm Hg), are based on the blood pressures obtained prior to intervention for 30 bus drivers in
the study. In adults the ideal diastolic blood pressure is less than 80 mm Hg. See data below.

III. Inferential Statistics (Chapters 9 and 10)
A. Use statistical software to construct a 95% confidence interval for µ, the
population mean diastolic blood pressure of all urban bus drivers in Stockholm. Give the
interpretation of this interval (“We are 95% confident …” ). Does it contain the ideal
blood pressure? What would you conclude about the bus driver sample?

B. In adults the ideal diastolic blood pressure is less than 80 mm Hg. At the 5%
significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that the mean

diastolic blood pressure of bus drivers in Stockholm exceeds the normal diastolic blood
pressure of 79 mm Hg? Use StatCrunch to conduct the appropriate test. Using the
StatCrunch output, perform. the full hypothesis test. (that is, follow the steps outlined in
class)

C. Did you come to the same conclusions in part A and B? Explain why or why
not.

IV. Putting It All Together
A. Summarize your investigation and make a recommendation that is based on your
statistical analysis. Put the three parts of the assignment into words: what you did,
what you observed, and what you concluded. What do you recommend for the bus
drivers based on your analysis? Looking for roughly four or five paragraphs.

B. How has this project helped you understand the purpose and value of the study
of statistics?
