Use R for all your computations. If you need to derive any formulas outside of R, please provide your
derivations as part of this HW submission.
Problem
An imaginary student from STA 462 whose name is Tom has a hard time to understand Method of
Moment and Maximum Likelihood Estimation. You have a task to help Tom to find the application of
these two techniques. These applications can be related to statistics or non-statistics fields. Your report
will address the following:
a) (2.5pts) First, you need to think about a research question and application
b) (2.5pts) Second, you need to find a data set to demonstrate your application
c) (2.5 pts) Third, you need to discuss your results
d) (2.5 pts) Forth, you are expected to give a 2 min presentation in class summarizing your findings.
As part, of this submission, you are expected to submit a report including: R code, derivations, figures,
tables, summaries, etc. If two HW submissions are found identical in terms of the data sets and the
research questions, both of them will earn score zero.
BONUS Question (2pts):
Provide your own example of the application of one concept from Ch 9 or Ch 10 STA 462 material. This
can’t be anything that you worked on as part of R HW1-R HW3 (e.g. bootstrap can’t be used!). Provide a
brief description of the problem. Provide your computations in R. Discuss your results and how this
example helped you understand better the concept presented in class.
