Introduction
The purpose of this laboratory is to develop your understanding about analyzing data acquired
via a factorial experimental design. This is primarily covered in the Design and Analysis of
Experiments textbook in Chapters 5 and 6. To complete this laboratory you will need to also
study the webpage in the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Engineering Statistics Handbook
at: http://www.itl.nist.gov/div898/handbook/pri/section4/pri471.htm. This webpage will
provide you with the data and R code you need to complete the first one-half of this laboratory.
It has complete directions and includes all the results. The second one-half of this laboratory
requires you to complete the analysis using the same data but by developing a regression
model such as those you studied in ANLY 500 and other courses.
Your Laboratory Assignment/Report
When you have completed the analysis of the data on the NIST webpage, using both a
statistical analysis and by developing a regression model, you need to write up your results in
report format, provide your R commands/scripts into an appendix. Your report should be
relative short compared to your appendices. You need to only include your results (written in
sentences) with as much supporting information as required, e.g. plots/figures, equations or
whatever you need to make your point. You need to compare the results of your statistical
analysis with those you get by your regression analysis. If you get different results, especially if
there are very different results, you need to report why this occurred.
Be careful when you are conducting your analysis to use the appropriate analysis
techniques/methods for data acquired in the type of experiment described!
NOTE: it will be easiest if you copy/paste your R commands/scripts as you work through the
laboratory rather than try to reconstruct them after you have completed it! I will check parts of
your appendices to verify that your code does work properly and return the results you are
reporting.
