EMSC3032 – Computing Asignment 1
Semester 1, 2018
What is the slope of the regresion line and the Y-intercept? What is the uncertainty of the slope estimate?
(Hint: plot the data and your regresion line to check that your model does actualy represent the data)
Q1 (5 marks) Estimates of global sea level from satelite altimetry can be found at sealevel.colorado.edu .
Download the numerical values, corrected for the inverted barometer effect, but with the seasonal signal
retained (i.e. NOT removed).
i) Derive a model to represent the observations. Plot the observations along with your modeled values.
ii) What is the linear rate (and uncertainty) of sea level rise over the altimeter period derived from these
observations?
iii) Is there a statisticaly significant aceleration in sea level rise?
iv) Calculate and plot a 60-day running mean of the values.
v) What is the amplitude of the annual variation in global sea level?
Q2 (5 marks) Measurements of CO
content of the atmosphere have been made every day in Hawai since
1958. Download the monthly values (in parts-per-milion, or ppm).
i) derive a numerical model to fit the observations. Al parameters of your model must be estimated. Plot
the observations, overlaid with your modeled values.
ii) What is the root-mean-square of your modeled values with respect to the observations? (If it is more
than 2 ppm, your model is not acurate enough!)
iii) What is the rate of aceleration of CO
content inhe Earth’s atmosphere?
iv) Use your model to find when the CO
level wil pas 500 ppm for the last time.
